Who Qualifies
You need to be a foreign national whose total stay in Korea is under six months, shopping at stores marked “Tax Free.” Purchases must total at least ₩15,000 in a single transaction.
How Much You Actually Get Back
Korea’s VAT rate is 10%, but don’t expect the full amount back — refund operators like Global Blue and Global Tax Free deduct administrative fees, so the real cash return usually lands somewhere between 4% and 7% of your purchase price.
Three Ways to Get Refunded
Instant Deduction at Checkout: Show your physical passport when paying, and the tax is deducted immediately. This option applies to purchases between ₩15,000 and ₩1,000,000 per receipt.
Downtown Kiosks: Refund kiosks in shopping districts like Myeongdong pay out in cash — Korean won, US dollars, Japanese yen, or Chinese yuan.
Airport Refund: Before you fly out, find the final refund desks (near Gate 28 in Terminal 1 or Gate 249 in Terminal 2), scan your passport, and collect your refund in cash or directly to a digital wallet like Alipay.
Rules You Can’t Skip
A physical passport is required at checkout for almost every store to issue a tax-free receipt. Keep everything unopened and unused while you’re still in the country — customs officers do check.
